In a case that reads like a Hollywood drama, a St. Louis man has been charged with steering more than $735,000 into his own ventures. Michael N. Jones, a 40-year-old, pled not guilty on Monday in federal court after being accused of exploiting his position as a power of attorney. The Eastern District of Missouri's U.S. Attorney's Office has charged him with eight counts of wire fraud, alleging he siphoned funds from a retired teacher over the past three years.
Jones, who assumed the power of attorney in March 2023, didn't waste time. Within a month, he reportedly spent over $12,000 from the victim's checking account, including charges to the popular platform, OnlyFans. The spree didn’t stop there. By the end of that April, after the victim's property was sold, Jones allegedly channeled the proceeds into purchasing four properties spread across St. Louis, Hillsboro, and East St. Louis.
“The misuse of entrusted funds not only violates the law but breaches the trust of those who rely on their caregivers,” commented a representative from the Department of Justice.
Jones' alleged misuse of funds didn't stop at real estate. Authorities claim he transferred an additional $20,000 to his personal bank account and another $140,000 to his Cash App. This money funded trips, culinary indulgences, life coaching sessions, and even more purchases on OnlyFans.
The consequences of these actions were severe for the victim. She was evicted from her assisted living facility after only one payment was made between April 2024 and November 2024, leaving an outstanding balance of $38,535. Even after her relocation to a new facility, Jones allegedly continued his financial neglect, resulting in an additional $52,502 in unpaid fees by the following year.
The charges Jones faces are no small matter. Wire fraud carries a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison, a staggering $250,000 fine, or both. As of now, the court has not announced any further hearings for Jones' case.
This story serves as a stark warning about the potential for misuse of power and trust, especially concerning those in vulnerable positions. The legal proceedings are sure to be closely watched as they unfold.
