In a drama that has gripped the Temecula Valley community, two school board members are feeling the heat after making eyebrow-raising comments about teenage water polo athletes. Joseph Komrosky and Jennifer Wiersma, who serve on the Temecula Valley Unified School District Board, came under intense scrutiny after comparing shirtless teen athletes in Speedos to exotic dancers and adult-content creators. The incident has led to one mother, Sharon Sardina, demanding their resignation over accusations of "sexualizing" minors.
The uproar began when a photo of six Temecula Valley High School water polo players, proudly wearing their brown-and-yellow team swim briefs, surfaced on Instagram. The image, captioned "Our fans > better than yours. GO BEARS," was meant to show support for the high school baseball team. However, it soon became the center of controversy after Wiersma posted the image to her Instagram story with a snide remark: “Speaking of dress code…are our teams now an ‘OnlyFans’ crew? Hats off to the kids that kept their pants on.”
“They do not have the best interest of our kids right now,” Sardina expressed, emphasizing the harm she feels has been done to the minors involved.
The comments have sparked a wave of outrage, with many parents rallying behind Sardina. They argue that the focus should not be on the athletes' attire but rather on the inappropriate comments made by the trustees. Sardina, whose 17-year-old son was among those pictured, spoke out at a school board meeting, demanding accountability and integrity from the board members. "Tonight, I am asking this Board to finally recognize the seriousness of what has happened," Sardina passionately declared.
The controversy has already had a tangible impact on Sardina's son, who was reportedly pulled from class for a discussion with the school principal. Sardina voiced concerns over the potential long-term effects on her son's trust and mental well-being, stating, "Trust has been broken but he knows he has a lot of good people behind him and backing him up."
Komrosky and Wiersma have faced significant backlash online and within the local community. While Wiersma reportedly issued an apology on her Instagram story, many, including Sardina, feel that a disappearing post does not suffice. Komrosky, in a statement to the LA Times, defended his stance, suggesting the image did not align with the district's standards.
The trustees, part of a conservative majority elected in 2022, have previously supported controversial policies, including bans on critical race theory and flags, as well as a parent notification policy. As the community calls for their resignation, the question remains whether these board members will step down or continue to face the community's growing discontent.
