The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), the UK's go-to ratings authority, has taken a bold step into the future by employing artificial intelligence to classify the entire HBO Max library. This tech-forward move came just in time for the streaming giant's UK debut earlier this year, and it's creating quite the buzz in the entertainment world.

In its 2025 annual report, the BBFC revealed that this innovative AI tool accomplished what would have taken approximately 1,570 human working days in just six months. The AI generated detailed metadata, flagging potential compliance issues like violence, nudity, and strong language for human review. Yet, fear not, cinephiles – final age ratings and bespoke content advice remain firmly in the hands of experienced BBFC officers.

“The BBFC classifying a record-breaking 1,315 feature films in 2025 highlights the resilience and vitality of the UK cinema sector,” said Phil Clapp, chief executive of the UK Cinema Association.

A Groundbreaking Year for the BBFC

2025 was undoubtedly a banner year for the BBFC, setting a new record by classifying 1,315 feature films for cinematic release – the highest in its illustrious 113-year history. This achievement even surpassed the previous record of 1,256 films set in 2024. Among the classifications, the 15 rating was the most commonly issued, covering 45% of cinema submissions, while the 12A rating followed closely at 35%. The 18 classification remained rare, applying to just 4% of submissions.

This year also celebrated the fifth anniversary of the BBFC's pioneering self-rating partnership with Netflix, a model that has inspired other streaming services to follow suit. This collaboration ensures that Netflix's UK content aligns with BBFC's trusted guidelines, reinforcing the importance of reliable age ratings for viewers.
