In a chilling twist of fate, Carol Maltesi, a 26-year-old model and mother, met her untimely demise at the hands of Davide Fontana, a 45-year-old Italian banker. Their paths crossed on the popular platform OnlyFans, where Fontana used a fake profile to orchestrate a meeting under the guise of filming a sexual video. This seemingly innocent connection spiraled into a nightmare that left an indelible mark on her family.
Fontana's fury boiled over when he learned of Maltesi's plans to move to Veneto to be closer to her 6-year-old son. In January 2022, during their video shoot, Fontana attacked Maltesi, striking her repeatedly with a hammer and then stabbing her. The gruesome murder shocked Italy, leaving Maltesi's young son motherless and a community in mourning.
“I would like to apologize again to everyone, especially to Carol's parents and to the son,” Fontana stated during his resentencing hearing, expressing remorse but acknowledging the unforgivable nature of his actions.
Following the murder, Fontana dismembered Maltesi's body, hiding the remains in a freezer for two months. His initial attempts to dispose of the body by burning failed, leading him to discard the remains off a cliff in Paline di Borno, a town in Northern Italy. Throughout this time, Fontana kept up the charade, impersonating Maltesi on the phone to assure her family she was traveling and would return soon.
The grim discovery of Maltesi's remains on March 21, 2022, set the wheels of justice in motion. Originally sentenced to 30 years, Fontana's punishment was intensified to life imprisonment upon appellate review, recognizing the premeditated nature of the crime. His actions, driven by jealousy and rage, garnered widespread condemnation.
In a gesture of reparation, Fontana compensated €39,000 to Maltesi's son, who, now 8 years old, carries the burden of a lost mother. This tragic tale serves as a somber reminder of the dark possibilities lurking behind seemingly innocuous online interactions.
