Indiana Sen. Jim Banks has amplified his concerns about what he describes as an "explosion of obscene pornography" flooding the internet. In a bold move, he’s urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to take a hard stance against this tide of explicit material by reviving the Obscenity Prosecution Task Force.
The Obscenity Prosecution Task Force, initially set up in 2005 during the Bush administration, was disbanded in 2011 under President Obama. Senator Banks believes this was a grave mistake. "Ending obscenity prosecution was a mistake. With explicit content only a click away, there has never been a more important time to enforce our laws," he passionately stated in a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
“OnlyFans has been exposed for allowing minors to sell explicit videos and for featuring child sex abuse content,” Banks added. “The site hosts other kinds of extreme and dangerous sexual content, including videos involving bestiality, incest, and acts that demean women.”
OnlyFans has soared in popularity, now boasting at least $7.2 billion in payments for its approximately 4.6 million creators. The platform, which allows the selling of adult content, is under scrutiny for the potential exposure of minors to explicit material. Banks highlights that the number of consumers of such content has reached an alarming 370 million users.
While pornographic content can legally be consumed by consenting adults in the U.S., Banks' concerns extend to the insidious reach of these platforms through social media sites like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. The senator emphasizes the importance of prosecuting illegal content to the fullest extent of the law, urging the Justice Department to re-establish the task force that once pursued hundreds of obscenity cases.
With the DOJ under the new leadership of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the question remains whether the department will heed Banks' call to action. The conversation around explicit content and its regulation is more pertinent than ever, with the stakes being the protection of minors and adherence to the First Amendment’s guidelines.
