Marius Borg Høiby: From Jail to House Arrest

Marius Borg Høiby, the 29-year-old son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, finds himself in a precarious situation as he transitions from prison to house arrest. Convicted last month of two counts of rape, Høiby's legal team is working tirelessly on an appeal. In an unexpected twist, Høiby will be spending the next four weeks under strict electronic monitoring at a home near the royal residence at Skaugum, as reported by the Norwegian publication VG.

Despite the gravity of the charges, Høiby has been granted temporary reprieve due to his mother's health challenges. The Royal House of Norway has been tight-lipped on the matter, but Guri Varpe, the royal family's spokesperson, confirmed their commitment to supporting Høiby during this difficult phase.

“The Crown Prince and Princess want to help Høiby at this phase of his life,” Varpe shared in a statement to VG.

A Trial That Shocked Norway

Høiby was sentenced to four years in prison in June after a sensational trial that caught the nation's attention. The BBC reported that the charges included two counts of rape and abuse against an ex-girlfriend, with evidence presented by prosecutors in the form of messages and media from Høiby's phone. Initially accused of additional counts of rape, Høiby was acquitted of these charges after a six-week trial.

The allegations stem from incidents reported by four women, claiming they were assaulted while asleep or incapacitated between 2018 and 2024. Høiby, however, maintains his innocence, vehemently denying the sexual assault claims.

The Royal Family's Burden

Adding to the family's struggles, Crown Princess Mette-Marit recently underwent a successful lung transplant due to pulmonary fibrosis. The Royal House announced her release from the hospital on July 14, with a year-long recovery anticipated. This has undoubtedly added emotional weight to the royal family as they navigate Høiby's legal troubles.

Mette-Marit expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support she received, stating, “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has stood by me throughout this long journey.” Her statement highlighted the contributions of healthcare professionals and the unwavering support of family and friends.
