In a shocking turn of events in Midland, Texas, what began as a routine police chase ended in a dramatic stand-off with 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal. Just days after firing at a police officer, Villarreal unleashed chaos on Friday morning, leaving one person dead and ten others wounded.
Authorities were already on the lookout for Villarreal, who was on their radar for attempted capital murder of a peace officer. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Villarreal took to the streets again, firing at both officers and civilians in Midland. The situation escalated when he barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, prompting a rapid response from the Midland Police.
Midland Police Chief Greg Snow described the scene as officers arrived to a hail of gunfire. "Officers were pinned down, requiring an armored vehicle for rescue," Snow noted. The tense standoff ended with Villarreal found dead in the clinic, although the circumstances of his death remain unclear.
“We moved to deny more targets for this active shooter,” Midland Mayor Lori Blong stated, highlighting the swift actions taken to secure the area.
The incident unfolded not far from where Villarreal had previously fired at a police officer during a traffic stop just two days earlier. After a chase, his abandoned vehicle was discovered close by, but Villarreal was nowhere to be found until Friday's tragic events.
Villarreal's past encounters with the law include a 2009 conviction for unlawfully carrying a firearm. He also faced charges in the early 2000s related to weapon possession, and a 2008 domestic violence charge, all of which were later dismissed.
As law enforcement converged on the scene, Andrea Mendias, who works nearby, recounted the chaos. "It sounded like a small explosion," she said, describing the barrage of gunfire and the swarm of heavily armed officers.
Midland Memorial Hospital reported that four victims required surgery, while five others have been treated and released. This incident marks another dark chapter in the region, reminiscent of the 2019 shooting spree that claimed multiple lives in the Odessa and Midland areas.
