Kayla Jade, a well-known sex worker and influencer, is voicing her concerns about the portrayal of sex work in the popular HBO series, Euphoria. In its third season, the show features Sydney Sweeney's character Cassie, who turns to OnlyFans to help her husband Nate, played by Jacob Elordi, pay off debts. Jade has expressed her discontent with this storyline, highlighting the unrealistic aspects of the portrayal.
“I would never understand the love hate relationship that people have towards SW [sex work] on shows like Euphoria,” Jade first appeared in an updated TikTok. “Like, it's great having them represented in TV when they're shown as a real person who just happens to be a worker.”
Jade, author of Call Girl Confidential, argues that Euphoria's depiction of Cassie is problematic, as it reinforces negative stereotypes about sex workers. She criticizes the show for portraying characters with no boundaries, willing to do anything for money, which she believes distorts the reality of the profession.
In particular, Kayla Jade takes issue with scenes where Cassie, played by Sweeney, is depicted in a dog costume for a photo session and another where she wears a see-through babydoll outfit while sucking on a pacifier. Jade asserts that such portrayals are not representative of real sex workers, who would likely reject such behavior.
“The vast majority would tell that guy to f off and probably report him,” the TikToker clarified. “If anything, it's just made us more aware, and we can clock a creep pretty quickly.”
Jade points out that while she and other sex workers face challenges building their businesses, large production companies profit from exaggerated and exploitative portrayals without facing the same risks.
Jade isn't alone in her criticism. Sydney Leathers, an OnlyFans creator, also disapproved of Cassie's storyline, particularly the age-play scenes. In a May 10 interview with Variety, Leathers expressed frustration over the unrealistic depiction, noting that such content is not even permissible on OnlyFans due to strict regulations.
Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney, who plays Cassie, has not directly addressed the criticisms but has shared insights into the unique challenges of her role. On May 12, Sweeney posted a behind-the-scenes video detailing her experience filming a dramatic "Cassie-zilla" scene, where her character is depicted as a giant rampaging through a miniature Los Angeles.
