Euphoria creator Sam Levinson is no stranger to stirring the pot, especially with the buzz surrounding the show's third season. Recently, Levinson delved into the controversy that has fans and critics talking: the OnlyFans storyline featuring Sydney Sweeney's character, Cassie Jacobs. "We caught a lot of criticism," Levinson admitted, while emphasizing that the show's narrative takes a "fairly critical look" at this modern phenomenon.
According to Deadline, Levinson shared his insights on why this particular plotline shouldn't be seen as controversial. "It’s not a niche business; it is a massive enterprise," he explained. Young people today face daunting choices, and for many, turning to platforms like OnlyFans is a viable option. "And so if you're young, you're going, 'I don't want to go work in a 9-to-5 at this place or that thing. Well, maybe I can just start taking photos of myself.'"
“The question is, what are the long-term consequences of that," Levinson continued. "What happens when you know, as a young person, you're on Instagram and these things, and you're told that you're the product, you're the brand, and now you’re 18 years old, and you're going well, 'How do I make money?' And I just thought chasing that desire, that kind of fast cash, was an interesting thing to kind of explore.”
Levinson also touched on the critical reception of the storyline, pondering if a more "empowering" portrayal might have been received differently. "You know, we take a fairly critical look at it. It hollows out the individual. You know, you're constantly just depending on the likes and external validation."
Sydney Sweeney wasn't just a passive participant in this narrative twist. Levinson recalled a conversation where he suggested filming alternatives for her nude scenes. Sweeney's response was clear: "I was talking to her about, 'Maybe there's ways to shoot around certain things,' and she looked at me and she's like, 'Are you kidding? I'm playing an OnlyFans model. You're telling me you're going to skirt around it?'"
While Cassie was navigating her newfound fame on OnlyFans, the rest of the Euphoria cast faced their own dramatic arcs. In a shocking turn, Cassie's husband Nate, played by Jacob Elordi, met a grim fate due to his involvement with a shady investor, Naz, portrayed by Jack Topalian. Nate's storyline culminated in a chilling scene where he was buried alive, with rattlesnakes adding to the horror.
Levinson has always aimed to deliver a narrative that balances fan expectations with unexpected twists. "There's this kind of funny thing... I always think, 'How can I give them what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn't so sure they wanted it?'" he mused, adding that the show's overarching theme of addiction and its consequences feels complete with this storyline.
Euphoria continues to be a topic of conversation, available for streaming on HBO Max, captivating audiences with its raw and unflinching storytelling.
