The creator of HBO Max's hit series Euphoria, Sam Levinson, has nothing but admiration for Sydney Sweeney's "brilliant" performance in the show's latest season. As the third season unfolds, it introduces a bold storyline featuring Sweeney's character, Cassie Howard, who ventures into the world of adult content via OnlyFans. While this plot twist has stirred up quite the debate, Levinson remains resolute in his support for the actress.
On May 2, during The Hollywood Reporter's Directors in Focus event, Levinson candidly discussed the new season, which also stars the likes of Zendaya, Alexa Demie, and Jacob Elordi. Addressing the buzz around Sydney's portrayal, he remarked, "What's interesting is if you push it a little bit, she becomes brilliant."
“You just do a few more takes, and she can reach these levels that are very honest emotionally, but also deeply funny," Levinson added. "She's able to anchor the scene with this kind of madness and chaos going on around her.”
Despite the accolades from her boss, Sydney Sweeney's daring role has not been without its critics. Some viewers have been vocal, even going as far as to label her performance "an embarrassment to women" and threatening to boycott the series. Nevertheless, Sydney confidently defends her work, as she shared in a candid interview with The Independent.
"I'm very proud of my work in Euphoria. I thought it was a great performance. But no one talks about it because I got naked," she mentioned. Highlighting a double standard in the industry, she pointed out, "When a guy has a sex scene or shows his body, he still wins awards and gets praise. But the moment a girl does it, it's completely different."
In this season, Cassie Howard's character embarks on a journey of adult content creation, which is temporarily halted at the request of her fiancé, Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi. However, upon discovering Nate's financial woes, Cassie decides to break off the engagement and fully commits to her new venture.
This storyline takes an intriguing turn as Cassie enlists her best friend and Nate's ex-girlfriend, Maddie Perez, to help revamp her OnlyFans presence. The latest episode showcases Maddie snapping photos and introducing Cassie to influencer Brandon Fontaine. With a taste for fame, Cassie is seen dancing provocatively and experimenting with drugs.
As anticipation builds, the next episode promises to deliver more thrilling developments. Cassie auditions for a show called LA Nights in a daring butterfly top, performing a "monologue of defiance" from Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, leaving viewers eager for more. Catch the drama unfold in Euphoria Season 3, Episode 5, airing May 10 on HBO Max.
