A misleading rumor has once again taken social media by storm, suggesting that Elon Musk is on the verge of purchasing OnlyFans. The claim, however, is nothing more than a cleverly crafted hoax. It all started with a screenshot lacking any credible source, paired with a fabricated quote, and quickly spread across platforms, convincing many that Musk was making a major business move.
This rumor traces back to March 2026, when a parody account known as @DailyNoud posted a tongue-in-cheek update claiming, "BREAKING: Elon Musk has expressed interest in purchasing OnlyFans and shutting down the company: 'Yeah, I'll do it. I don't see why not.'" Despite the account's reputation for satire, the quote was cropped and shared as if legitimate, losing its parody context along the way.
“At the moment, there is no credible evidence that Elon Musk is actively trying to buy OnlyFans." – AWDIGITALWORLD on X
Fact-checkers acted swiftly to dispel the misinformation. Accounts like Fact Of X and outlets such as Italy's Open clarified that the viral claim had no basis in reality. They confirmed it originated from @DailyNoud, which has no ties to Musk, X, or OnlyFans. Thorough searches of Musk's official accounts and credible news sources yielded no evidence supporting the acquisition rumor.
Adding to the confusion was the unrelated death of OnlyFans' owner, which some speculated could lead to a Musk takeover. However, this speculation was unfounded. Real merger talks had been underway months prior, involving Architect Capital, not Musk.
Financially, an Elon Musk takeover of OnlyFans doesn't add up. OnlyFans is far from a struggling company, boasting impressive profits. In 2024 alone, it reported a pre-tax profit of £540m ($684m). To buy and then shut down such a profitable venture would defy Musk's usual acquisition strategy.
While Musk does have a history that touches on OnlyFans, it's unrelated to any acquisition plans. A Texas judge recently dismissed a lawsuit involving Musk and the platform, but it was tied to content moderation issues on X, not a purchase.
The rumor even sparked a Polymarket betting event, which placed the likelihood of Musk buying OnlyFans at a mere 4 percent. Despite the buzz, neither Musk nor OnlyFans has confirmed any such plans, leaving the platform operating as usual under its current ownership.
