In a case that has captured local attention, former Derby primary school teacher Alex Withey was cleared of a charge alleging sexual assault of a young pupil in a classroom setting. The trial, which unfolded at Derby Crown Court, took place in Mansfield, and the presiding Judge Penelope Stanistreet-Keen directed the jury to deliver a not guilty verdict.
The 32-year-old educator, residing in Oulton Close, Shelton Lock, had consistently denied the accusations from the moment they surfaced. The allegations centered around an incident at Lakeside Primary Academy in Alvaston, where Withey was accused of inappropriate behavior while the pupil was seated on his lap.
“I have always maintained my innocence and am relieved that the court has recognized this,” said Alex Withey following the verdict.
The charges, brought against Withey in 2023, led to his suspension by the Harmony Trust, the organization overseeing Lakeside Primary Academy. In a statement, the Trust confirmed that Withey was no longer employed with them at the time of the trial. The court's decision now leaves the path open for Withey to rebuild his life and career without the shadow of these serious allegations looming over him.
While the case has concluded, it highlights the critical nature of legal proceedings in education-related accusations, underscoring the importance of due process and thorough investigation in such sensitive matters.
