In a whirlwind of controversy, two trustees from a California school district have landed in hot water after making eyebrow-raising comments about some very spirited high school athletes. The Temecula Valley High School water polo team found themselves at the center of attention when a photo captured their fervent support at a baseball game – all while sporting their competition swimwear.
On April 28, the water polo team, caught between swim meets, decided to cheer on their baseball peers in a rather unconventional way. With "B-E-A-R-S-!" boldly displayed across their chests, the athletes donned their Speedos, pulling down their trousers and removing their shirts to show undying school spirit. The moment was immortalized in a social media post by the Temecula Valley baseball team, which read: "Our fans > better than yours. GO BEARS." However, this post has since disappeared from the digital world.
Before the post vanished, it had already sparked a debate. Joseph Komrosky, Board President of Temecula Valley Unified School District, compared the athletes to "Chippendales," while board member Jen Wiersma made the controversial leap to label them as resembling an "OnlyFans crew." The comparisons were met with widespread disapproval, especially considering these students were simply wearing their competitive gear.
Sharon Sardina, a parent of one of the water polo players, voiced her dismay in an interview with Press Enterprise on May 9. She declared, "The fans loved it, the team loved it, the baseball coach loved it. Everybody loved the support and thought that was pretty cool because that's typically what water polo players do as far as cheering on their teams."
“I would love a written and verbal apology, not just to myself, but to the kids involved in our team,” she said. “I honestly, I would love a formal resignation [of the board members]. This pattern of behavior has created discomfort among so many families that I just think that they need to resign.”
Sardina also revealed that Wiersma had posted an apology, though it has since expired, leaving no traceable evidence. Despite the growing calls for action, both Wiersma and Komrosky have declined to make formal comments.
For many families, this incident has underscored concerns about the inappropriate sexualization of student athletes. What was meant to be a moment of harmless school enthusiasm has unfortunately turned into a contentious issue, leaving the community in search of accountability and change.
