Azealia Banks is no stranger to controversy, and this time, she's making waves with her femme-shaming comments aimed at gay men. The rapper took to social media platform X to express her contentious views, writing, "defund the faggots." Her remarks were in response to OnlyFans creator Corey Jacob's post, which featured two striking men in black Speedos with the caption, "Why don’t men look like this anymore."
Jacob's tweet ignited a conversation about body image ideals within the gay community, drawing various reactions. Banks, however, seized the opportunity to offer her unsolicited opinion, claiming the gay community "has let themselves go" and blaming the cessation of enforcing heteronormativity. "Because we’ve stopped enforcing heteronormativity. This is why we need to defund the faggots," Banks stated. "Ever since we told them they can wear lipstick in public, gays have let themselves go."
"They said men, and here you go making it about only gay men," one critic fired back in the comments, while another suggested, "Keep our names out your mouth."
Femme-shaming, or femmephobia, refers to the stigmatization of men with feminine traits, both within and outside the queer community. This can manifest through expressions like make-up, dress, or mannerisms. Such discrimination is often visible on gay dating platforms, where phrases like "Masc4Masc" and "no fats, no femmes" highlight the bias against certain body types and looks.
British gay icon Alan Carr has spoken out against femme-shaming, sharing his own experiences of being called a "fat fairy" by his father. "Camp men aren’t the enemy here," Carr remarked. Meanwhile, I Kissed a Boy star Jack Smith views leaning into femininity as a reclamation of power, though he acknowledges the term 'femboy' can be derogatory if used to insult. "However, if used to insult, it simply amplifies the hate that, as a community, we’re trying to move past," Smith commented.
It's no secret that Azealia Banks has a history of making inflammatory remarks online. Her past comments have included homophobic and transphobic statements, such as her 2021 comparison of gender-affirming care to "getting castrated." This latest incident adds another chapter to Banks' controversial legacy, sparking outrage and prompting many to reflect on the damaging effects of femme-shaming.
