Woody Allen, the renowned director and comedian, has offered a rare glimpse into his marriage with Soon-Yi Previn, who is 35 years his junior. The couple, who tied the knot in 1997, have adopted two daughters, Bechet and Manzie. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Allen described Soon-Yi as "disciplined," "decisive," and "a wonderful mother," giving fans a closer look at their family dynamics.
Though their relationship has been a topic of controversy due to Soon-Yi's adoption by Mia Farrow, Allen's former partner, Allen remains open about their journey. During the candid chat, he admitted, "If anyone had told me years ago that I would be married to a girl much younger than me with no background in New York or none of the similar interests growing up and that she’d be a Korean orphan, I would have said, ‘No chance.’"
“But it didn’t work out that way.”
Their relationship's complexities were further explored in the HBO docuseries "Allen vs Farrow," which delved into the breakdown of Allen's relationship with Mia Farrow. The series addressed allegations made by Mia's daughter, Dylan Farrow, accusing Allen of sexual assault when she was a child – allegations Allen has consistently denied. Despite the serious nature of the accusations, Allen expressed his surprise at how quickly people are willing to accept these narratives.
Responding to Allen's remarks, Dylan Farrow stated to The Wall Street Journal, "I am sick and tired of the misogynistic and unscientific narrative that I was coached or brainwashed. Far from it, this is a truth I reported as a child and have continued to recount consistently since."
During the interview, Allen also reflected on his career, admitting that his "many" regrets are primarily professional. "I wish I didn’t do this film, I wish I had made this film better, I wish I had shot this scene differently, I wish I had not written this, I wish I had gone in that direction," he shared. Despite the personal and professional challenges, Woody Allen's reflections reveal a man who continues to engage with his past and present with unflinching honesty.
