Meet Nathan Cullen, a 24-year-old former trainee accountant from Arklow, who found himself embroiled in a web of deceit. He was sentenced at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court for pilfering a whopping €122,835 from an accountancy firm's clients. This stolen treasure chest funded an extravagant lifestyle of cocaine, trips to Liverpool FC, and even OnlyFans indulgences.
Cullen, who started his accounting journey at MB Accountants in February 2022, was entrusted with payroll duties. But with a crafty sleight of hand, he manipulated the firm's banking systems to transfer funds into his personal account, all under the guise of legitimate transactions. According to Detective Sergeant Donal O’Sullivan, Cullen employed a "dummy receipt" method, using banking apps and digipass devices to cover his tracks.
“You had everything going for you and you threw it away,” Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin told Cullen, capturing the gravity of his actions.
Cullen's high-flying deception continued even after his exit from the accounting firm. Retaining a key, he repeatedly accessed the premises, siphoning off an additional €63,835. His undoing came when a vigilant company noticed an unauthorized €5,000 attempt, leading to a thorough investigation and his eventual arrest in June 2025.
In court, it was revealed that Cullen's actions were driven by a vicious cycle of drug debt and threats from local criminals. With €14,000 funneled through a Revolut account and €12,000 in cash withdrawals, his spending spree also included mundane expenses like McDonald's meals and luxury flights.
Despite the severity of Cullen's crimes, the court opted for leniency. Judge Ní Chúlacháin, acknowledging his mitigating factors, suspended his five-year sentence on strict conditions. Cullen must continue addiction treatment and repay the stolen funds, a process estimated to span 17 years.
Defence barrister Fiachra Nicholas Treacy painted Cullen as a once-promising footballer who lost his way after personal upheaval. Now sober and seeking a fresh start, Cullen is striving to join the Defence Forces, though this ambition remains on hold until his legal woes are resolved.
The saga of Nathan Cullen serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of straying from the straight and narrow. His story is a blend of talent, missteps, and the hope for redemption.
