A New Chapter in the Marriage Equality Debate

A fresh storm is brewing in the ongoing battle for marriage equality, and it’s called the "Greater Than" campaign. Fueled by 47 anti-LGBTQ+ groups and spearheaded by figures like Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, this movement is on a mission to reverse the U.S. Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell ruling. Their argument? It's all about the kids – or so they claim.

Questioning the Motives

The campaign's slogan, "Child rights > adult desires," implies a noble cause, but its critics see a different picture. As Lila Rose of Live Action states in the campaign's promotional video, "Redefining marriage robs children of the natural right to their mother and father." Such statements have sparked outrage among supporters of marriage equality, who view this as a thinly veiled attempt to undermine the rights of LGBTQ+ families.

“It’s a mother and a father that bring forth children into the world, and that’s by design, because children need a mother and a father.” – Tony Perkins

Highlighting Contradictions

While the Greater Than campaign focuses on the supposed dangers to children, it remains conspicuously silent on issues that genuinely affect families. Advocates for LGBTQ+ rights point out the lack of support from these groups for policies like paid family leave, universal healthcare, and affordable childcare – all of which directly impact a child's well-being.

Interestingly, the campaign's visual branding mimics that of the Human Rights Campaign, borrowing its blue and yellow color scheme and sans serif font, yet the message couldn't be more different. This juxtaposition highlights the stark contrast in values between the two movements.

The Real Threats to Children

LGBTQ+ advocates argue that if the Greater Than campaign truly cared about children's welfare, it would address genuine threats like gun violence and healthcare access. Instead, the focus seems to be on dismantling the rights of queer families, raising questions about the real motivations behind their actions.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: the fight for equality is far from over, and both sides are digging in their heels for what promises to be a contentious battle.
