Fancy a trip to the Roaring 20s? 'Madam' invites you to do just that, as it opens this week in New York City. This immersive opera brings to life the captivating tale of Polly Adler, a woman who carved out a name for herself in the glittering underworld of Manhattan. A century after her heyday, Adler's story is revived in a production that promises to whisk audiences back to a world of speakeasies, gangsters, and high society.
Before the infamous names of Heidi Fleiss or the Mayflower Madam, Polly Adler was the talk of the town, running one of the most renowned bordellos in Manhattan. Her establishment was a hotbed for the city's elite and notorious figures. Now, her life and legacy are being celebrated in 'Madam – The Opera,' a world premiere event by Killer Queen Opera in collaboration with Gallery Particulier in Flatbush.
Composed by Felix Jarrar and with a libretto by Bea Goodwin, the opera explores Adler's journey from a hopeful immigrant to a cultural icon. "Polly’s story is an American story: an immigrant working towards the dream of wealth, of community and, most importantly, of home," Goodwin shared in a statement. The production invites audiences to don their finest Jazz Age attire, allowing them to become part of the action as they witness Adler's rise to prominence.
Directed and choreographed by Christina Swanson, the opera stars Karina Camile Parker as Polly, supported by a talented cast including Evan Main, Krissy Terwilliger, and Aja Nile Brimm. The creative team, featuring Giulia Magarelli and Curtis Faulkner among others, ensures a rich and immersive experience.
The opera is complemented by a visual arts exhibition at Gallery Particulier titled 'Body Positivity – Gender Euphoria,' which delves into themes of identity and liberation. This exhibition runs alongside the opera, offering a dynamic interplay between visual and performing arts that enhances the narrative's emotional depth.
Catch this unique production at Gallery Particulier on November 7, 9, and 11. Dive into the glamour and grit of a bygone era, and perhaps enjoy a post-show drink at Polly's, a speakeasy-themed bar reminiscent of Adler's heyday.
