Euphoria creator Sam Levinson isn't shying away from criticism. Following the season three premiere of the hit show on April 12, fans have been buzzing about Sydney Sweeney's OnlyFans storyline. Levinson, however, is setting the record straight, insisting that viewers might be misinterpreting the scene's creative intent.
In the premiere episode, Sweeney's character, Cassie, is seen doing a playful dog-themed photoshoot in the somewhat outdated confines of her home. Preparing for a lavish wedding with her fiancé Nate Jacobs, portrayed by Jacob Elordi, Cassie's quirky shoot has drawn both laughs and criticism. Levinson explained to The Hollywood Reporter, in an interview that coincided with the premiere, that the scene's humor is intentional. "[Cassie] has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor," Levinson shared.
“What makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it.”
Levinson further elaborated on the layers of absurdity woven into the scene, suggesting that the goal was to occasionally pull viewers out of Cassie's fantasy. "What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion," the 41-year-old creator noted. By 'breaking the wall,' Levinson aims to add depth and humor, encouraging audiences to see beyond the surface of Cassie's antics. It's a testament to Euphoria's knack for blending drama with unexpected comedic moments.
