Rachel Dolezal, the social media personality who sparked debates over racial identity, is now in the spotlight for a different reason. Recently, she took to Instagram to share a poignant update about her health – she has been diagnosed with Stage-1 Melanoma. This revelation comes 11 years after her racial identity controversy made headlines.
In a candid Instagram post, Dolezal opened up to her 70,000 followers about undergoing surgery to address her melanoma diagnosis. Reflecting on her past, she described the experience as a "tough but grounding reminder" of the long-term effects that sun exposure – and growing up in a sunscreen-averse family – can have.
“It's a tough but grounding reminder of what years of sun (and a childhood in a family that didn’t believe in sunscreen) can do over time,” she shared candidly.
To maintain her desired glow without the sun’s risks, the 48-year-old has turned to liquid tanning drops. These drops, enriched with carotene, offer a safer alternative by imparting a natural tint similar to that achieved by consuming carrot and beet juices.
Vowing to avoid sunbathing, Dolezal is now focused on safer tanning methods. She explains that carotene, found in everyday vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots, can subtly enhance skin tone when ingested. Dolezal is determined never to "lay out in the sun" again after this cancer scare, emphasizing the importance of skin protection.
Rachel's story follows closely on the heels of another celebrity skin cancer revelation. John Cena, famed wrestler-turned-actor, also shared his own experience with skin cancer. Despite growing up in Massachusetts and living part of his adult life in Florida, Cena admitted to neglecting proper skin protection.
Cena disclosed to People magazine that he has had cancerous spots removed from his chest and shoulder, highlighting the critical need for regular dermatological check-ups and sun protection. “It shows up like a white polka dot on the side of my chest and on my shoulder,” Cena noted, urging others to take skin health seriously.
Both Dolezal and Cena's stories underscore the importance of vigilance and care when it comes to sun exposure and skin health.
