After being released on police bail, Namewee, the Malaysian singer, opened up on November 14 about a harrowing experience that left him feeling helpless. The incident involved the tragic death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, which Namewee witnessed firsthand in a hotel room. Describing the moment as shocking, he expressed the despair he felt trying to save Iris.
“It was shocking. I tried my best to save her, but nothing worked. That image will stick in my mind forever.”
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, found himself under police custody for the longest duration he has ever experienced, following the case's reclassification as murder. Despite his past dealings with law enforcement over various controversies, this was a particularly drawn-out engagement. He mentioned spending over eight hours daily assisting with the investigation, with the longest session stretching to 15 hours in one day.
Namewee also took a moment to commend the diligence and professionalism of the police teams involved, noting their thorough approach in recording his statements.
Referring to the public's negative reaction towards Iris's past OnlyFans career, Namewee urged for an end to the judgment and cyberbullying. He highlighted the need to respect individuals' career choices, emphasizing that having an OnlyFans account doesn't define a person's character.
“Don’t look down on the careers of others. Having an OnlyFans account doesn’t mean she was a bad person.”
Currently, Namewee's release remains temporary, pending until November 26 as authorities await Iris's autopsy and toxicology reports. As investigations continue, the public remains eager for updates.
