Imagine a Hollywood power couple who, despite their individual successes, have always kept their professional lives separate. That's the story of Michelle Pfeiffer and her husband, David E. Kelley, until now. The couple, after 32 years of harmonious marriage, has finally teamed up for Kelley's new Apple+ TV series, "Margot’s Got Money Troubles." In this riveting show, based on a best-selling novel, Pfeiffer plays Shyanne Millet, a former Hooters waitress whose daughter, played by Elle Fanning, decides to launch an OnlyFans account after an unexpected pregnancy.
Pfeiffer and Kelley had a long-standing agreement not to work together, fearing it might put their marriage at risk. "I've seen a lot of couples where they seem to have a really great marriage, and then they work together and next year they're filing for divorce," Pfeiffer once confessed. But the allure of the role was too tempting for Pfeiffer to resist. In a candid moment on "Today," she revealed, “My husband and I have never worked together, and there was this book... I just fell madly in love with her and I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing her.”
“Nobody writes, honestly, better for women than he does,” Pfeiffer praised her husband, highlighting the reason behind her decision to finally collaborate with him.
The pair's love story began in 1993 on a blind date, a setup Pfeiffer initially resisted due to past experiences. Yet, it was her best friend who convinced her to give it a shot, leading to what would become a fairytale romance. They married less than a year later, blending their lives with the adoption of Pfeiffer’s daughter and the birth of their son.
Although they kept their creative worlds apart for decades, Pfeiffer had always admired Kelley's work. During a 2022 interview, she admitted, "We’re both kind of fierce when we work, and so if I come home, and I’ve had a bad day, and I’m upset about something, I want him to be on my side because he hasn’t heard the other side.”
"Margot’s Got Money Troubles" proved to be the perfect project to unite their talents. Kelley, who is no stranger to crafting compelling narratives, found Pfeiffer's portrayal of Shyanne to be the perfect fit. At a recent press event, he shared, "When I read the book, I could only see one person playing it, and we’re lucky enough that she said yes, the second luckiest yes I’ve gotten from her." The show also features a star-studded cast including Nicole Kidman and Marcia Gay Harden.
The couple's collaborative debut has been nothing short of a success, with Kelley lauding Pfeiffer's performance as "a home run for all of us." Their venture into working together not only showcases their individual talents but also solidifies their bond both on and off the screen.
