NBA athletes are no strangers to the limelight, but Michael Porter Jr., the new forward for the Brooklyn Nets, has taken it to another level with his recent podcast appearances. Known for his candid takes on gender politics, Porter has sparked conversations with his views on OnlyFans, the WNBA, and marriage. Naturally, these discussions led to mentions of Andrew Tate, a figure synonymous with controversial opinions in the same realm.
During a chat on One Night with Andrew Steinberg of the Nelk Boys, Porter mentioned using Andrew Tate's content as a "test" for women he's dating. "I’m not saying I’m a misogynist or anything, but I’ll throw on some Andrew Tate and see how they react," Porter said, stirring up quite the media frenzy. Tate, known for his infamous self-description as a misogynist, became a hot topic following Porter’s remarks.
“That’s the point. I might not even be agreeing with his takes, but sometimes I think it’s funny to see just how people react to certain things that are said,” Porter explained.
Appearing on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, Porter sought to clarify his stance. He stressed that while he uses Tate's commentary as a means to gauge reactions, he doesn't necessarily share those views. "There’s a lot of things he says that I don’t agree with," Porter stated, emphasizing the diversity of opinions and reactions as his primary interest.
In fact, Porter compares this tactic to bringing a date to his church to see how she behaves. "Especially if you’re going to lock all the way in with somebody, you gotta know how they really are," he noted. For Porter, it’s all about uncovering authenticity and sincerity in people.
Porter acknowledges that his willingness to voice these thoughts publicly is what often lands him in hot water. "I’ll have conversations that people think should be had in private," he admitted. Yet, despite the controversies, Porter remains steadfast in his opinions and unafraid to express them openly. As he transitions to the bustling New York media landscape with the Nets, only time will tell how these bold statements play out amid an underwhelming season.
