British musician Kate Nash recently opened up about the financial challenges she faces when touring. In a candid discussion with MPs, she revealed that she resorted to selling pictures of her bum online as a means to fund her music tours. Nash explained that the spiraling costs of live performances left her with no choice but to seek alternative revenue streams.
"I was doing everything I could to cut costs, which I really hate doing as an employer," Nash confessed, sharing her guilt about laying off a crew member before Christmas.
Speaking to the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, Nash highlighted the financial burdens that artists face due to post-Brexit rules affecting performing arts in the EU. She candidly shared that her recent European tour resulted in a £26,000 loss, while her UK tour left her £13,000 in the red. Despite her success and dedicated fanbase, Nash admits that she can only sustain her tours thanks to her OnlyFans account, a platform she joined to shed light on the issue.
Nash passionately warned MPs about the potential loss of the UK's cultural reputation if the situation doesn't improve. "We are at risk of losing our reputation and pride in our culture," she emphasized, stressing the importance of addressing these financial barriers. Nash cautioned that without change, music tours could become exclusive to the wealthy, leaving emerging artists with limited opportunities.
Beyond her personal struggles, Nash described the dire straits faced by fellow musicians who are forced to sell their instruments, furniture, and even homes to manage costs. "Sometimes, I'm offered a gig in Europe and I can't say yes because I will lose money doing it," she lamented.
In her testimony, Nash also criticized entertainment giants like Spotify and Live Nation for profiting from artists' work without sufficiently supporting them. Her call to action is clear: the music industry needs to reconsider its approach to support artists and preserve the cultural fabric of UK music.
