German bobsleigh sensation Lisa Buchwitz is breaking new ground, not just on the ice but in the online world too. Ahead of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, Buchwitz, a gold medalist from the PyeongChang Olympics and a 2024 World Championships winner, has taken a unique approach to funding her training. Turning to the popular adult content platform OnlyFans, she is generating the necessary funds to fuel her athletic ambitions.
Buchwitz offers subscribers an insider's view of her rigorous training regime, sharing videos in sports bras, bikinis, and sleek bobsleigh suits. Her efforts are paying off, with each subscription priced at $24.99. Despite her team's impressive fourth-place ranking in the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) world standings, financial backing has been elusive, prompting this innovative funding strategy.
“A single season’s team expenses amount to around 50,000 euros (86 million won),” Buchwitz explained, lamenting the lack of sponsorships even as a gold medalist.
Lisa isn't alone in her endeavors. Georg Fleischhauer, a brakewoman on Germany’s men's bobsleigh team, has also embraced OnlyFans, where he showcases his life as an elite athlete and highlights his physique. Fleischhauer is clear about his intentions, stating, "I’m not a porn star," as he shares his journey with fans.
But it's not just the bobsleigh athletes getting creative. Six German speed skaters have found success in the nude calendar market, selling them for two years running and earning a tidy sum of 3,500 euros in their first year. Meanwhile, figure skaters Anika Hocke and Robert Kunkel have amassed a TikTok following of 140,000, which helps cover their training costs.
The financial struggles faced by these athletes underscore a broader issue in winter sports. As the dpa reports, not every athlete enjoys the sponsorships associated with more popular sports like biathlon or affiliations with organizations like the military or police. Many, like Alpine skier Franz Von Almen, rely on crowdfunding to sustain their careers and keep their Olympic dreams alive.
The German Sports Support Foundation offers some assistance, but for many athletes, it's not enough to cover all expenses. As the spotlight continues to shine on these creative funding solutions, it highlights the dedication and resilience of athletes determined to compete on the world stage, no matter the financial obstacles.
