Euphoria's latest season has certainly raised eyebrows with its audacious approach to explicit content, sparking conversations around both the water cooler and across social media. This time around, the show's narrative has taken a bold leap, focusing heavily on explicit scenes that have become a defining feature of the new episodes.
In this season, Sydney Sweeney's character, Cassie, explores the world of OnlyFans, while Hunter Schafer's Jules takes on the role of a sugar baby, experiencing a unique twist with a "mummification" scene. Meanwhile, Zendaya's character finds herself immersed in the world of strip clubs, witnessing unsettling intimate encounters. These developments have left fans buzzing and critics questioning the show's creative direction.
Mam Smith, the show's dedicated intimacy co-ordinator, is shedding light on the pressures and challenges faced by the actors this season. In a candid discussion on the "In the Envelope" podcast, Smith shared that the cast was "pushed" to new levels, revealing that the production team was focused on ensuring a safe environment for these vulnerable scenes.
“These actors were pushed – they were asked – to be so vulnerable, that creating a safe container was so important," Smith explained. "We immediately were able to find a workflow that supported [Sam Levinson’s] work, and it allowed the actors to feel safe.”
Despite the increased explicit content, Smith critiqued the trend of TV shows pushing boundaries, advocating instead for "more creative ways" to depict intimacy that engage audiences without being overtly explicit.
Smith, who has a background as a stunt actor, praised the standardized practice of including intimacy co-ordinators on set, particularly on Euphoria. She noted that the collaborative efforts by production teams have made her role more seamless, highlighting the importance of cooperation among departments to maintain a respectful and safe set.
The evolution of her role has been significant, transforming from a need for persuasion to a routine practice embraced by all. "On Euphoria, I would step in and the PAs would be like: ‘OK, we've closed the set, come take a look.' It's a real arc for me," Smith reflected.
As the show continues to push creative boundaries, the commitment to actor safety and support remains a top priority, ensuring that Euphoria can explore provocative themes without compromising the well-being of its stars.
