Dating App Activity Uncovered

Deceased billionaire and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein apparently maintained multiple profiles on Match.com back in 2012, despite his notorious past. Files from the Department of Justice reveal emails from Match.com linking Epstein’s Gmail and Yahoo addresses to profiles under the usernames "jeeproject" and "sultan175." It seems even those with a scandalous past are not immune to the allure of online dating, with Epstein receiving emails for signing up, resubmitting profiles, and even birthday wishes that coincided with his 60th birthday.

Legal and Ethical Concerns

While Epstein's use of dating apps might raise eyebrows, it also highlights serious concerns about background checks on such platforms. Attorney Carrie Goldberg, who represents clients suing Match Group, expressed little surprise at the revelations. "I'm not at all surprised that a convicted sex predator was using Match Group products at all," she shared with Mashable. The files also suggest Epstein may have had connections with other dating apps and possibly invested in Match Group, the parent company of popular dating apps like Tinder and Hinge.

Background Checks and Safety Measures

The spotlight is now on Match Group's policies, as questions arise about their responsibility to conduct background checks. Match.com's 2012 Terms of Agreement clearly stated that they did not conduct criminal background checks, although they reserved the right to do so. Since then, Match Group has reportedly strengthened its trust and safety practices. A spokesperson mentioned, "The activity referenced dates back more than a decade, during a time when safety tools and registry checks were far more limited than they are today." Recent efforts include facial scanning for new Tinder users in the U.S.

Financial Ties and Investments

The Epstein files also hint at possible financial ties to Match Group. Stock portfolio statements from Deutsche Bank in 2015 and 2016 identify holdings of Match stock, though ownership remains unclear. An email exchange in 2018 between Epstein and his stock trader suggested investing in IAC, Match Group's then-parent company, further intertwining Epstein with the world of dating apps.

Connections to High-Profile Figures

Intriguingly, the files mention connections to high-profile individuals such as IAC chairman Barry Diller. Epstein allegedly claimed Diller visited his infamous Little St. James Island, yet Diller has stated his visits were purely architectural. As the revelations unfold, the connections between Epstein, his investments, and notable figures add another layer of complexity to his already controversial legacy.
