Euphoria's much-anticipated third season hit screens on Monday, April 13, bringing back its ensemble of stars including Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and the captivating Zendaya. But fans couldn't help but notice the absence of Barbie Ferreira, who played the beloved Kat Hernandez. Many were left wondering about the reasons behind her departure.
Barbie Ferreira, 29, has now opened up about her decision to leave the hit HBO series after two successful seasons. She addressed the swirling rumors of a feud on Amanda Hirsch’s "Not Skinny But Not Fat" podcast, aired on April 14. "It wasn’t dramatic," she clarified, setting the record straight.
“In fact, it was kind of the opposite of dramatic, where it was a long process of being like, ‘I don’t know if this is it for me,'” Ferreira shared.
Ferreira explained that her dissatisfaction with her character's storyline was a primary factor in her decision. "The thing is, I don’t need to be on the biggest TV show on earth if I’m not, like, acting," she said candidly. Conversations with the production team failed to develop Kat into a fully fleshed-out character, leading Ferreira to consider other creative avenues.
She expressed a desire to engage in projects that challenge her as an actress, sharing, "I’d rather do an indie movie where I’m acting... rather than kind of sitting around to be a background character." For Ferreira, stepping away was a "long, arduous process" of weighing her options and ultimately believing in her potential.
Ferreira's decision reflects her passion for indie cinema and storytelling. "I want to produce indie cinema... I do indie movies that literally are made on a shoestring budget, but it’s like cool and real stories," she said, revealing her plans for the future.
She announced her departure back in August 2022 on Instagram, thanking fans for their support and expressing her hopes that viewers resonated with Kat Hernandez's journey. "I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it," she wrote.
Meanwhile, 'Euphoria' fans can catch the new season on HBO Max, Sky Atlantic, and NOW, with the UK schedule running until June 1. While Ferreira may not be returning to the 'Euphoria' set, her journey in the film world is just beginning.
