Barbie Ferreira, once a Tumblr It-girl and Euphoria star, is now carving out her own path in the indie film world. At 29, Barbie reminisces about her teenage years, humorously recalling the damage she caused to her MacBook’s Photo Booth app during the 2010s. Her early fascination with indie sleaze artists like Arcade Fire and Grimes fueled her creative aspirations, and now she's channeling that energy into her film career.
Mile End Kicks, a coming-of-age film set in 2010s Montreal from director Chandler Levack, has given Ferreira the chance to step into a world she once fantasized about. "It feels like a fantasy of what I wish my life was in 2011," Barbie shares, revealing how deeply the era impacted her.
“All I’ve ever wanted was to be an actress, and what brings me the most joy is being able to work on projects that I like and get to challenge myself.”
Departing from the mainstream spotlight after Euphoria, Barbie is embracing smaller, filmmaker-driven projects, where she can experiment and grow. Alongside Mile End Kicks, her recent work includes a role in Daniel Goldhaber's Faces of Death remake, which premiered in April. These projects are a testament to her pursuit of creativity over commercial success.
In Mile End Kicks, Barbie portrays Grace, a Toronto-born music critic navigating the challenges of a big city – a role that resonated with her own experiences of moving from New Jersey to New York at 17. The film also sheds light on the industry's harsh realities for women, something Barbie acknowledges has slowly changed post-Me Too.
Barbie's passion for indie films shines through, as she finds inspiration in Levack's dedication to Mile End Kicks, a project ten years in the making. "A passion project can happen if you really try," Barbie affirms, highlighting the hard work but rewarding nature of such endeavors.
Outside of her acting career, Barbie is an avid movie enthusiast, often visiting theaters in Los Angeles to soak up cinematic gems. She considers this regular movie-watching her film education, which fuels her drive to create timeless, out-of-the-box films that resonate with her generation.
As Barbie Ferreira continues to chase her indie dreams, she's not just acting – she's learning, growing, and passionately shaping her future in filmmaking, one unique project at a time.
