A proposed 50% tax on OnlyFans creators by Florida gubernatorial candidate James Fishback has become a hot topic, especially among the platform's users. The tax, intended to generate $200 million for education while combating what Fishback describes as "cultural degeneracy," has been met with fierce opposition.
Anya Lacey, a prominent OnlyFans star with over a million followers on Instagram, has not held back her criticism. In a CNN segment released on Tuesday, she labeled the tax as "silly" and questioned its moral grounds in a state teeming with strip clubs. Lacey's comments have since gone viral, fueling the debate further.
“This state is covered in strip clubs,” Lacey said in the CNN segment. “It’s silly to say, like, ‘Oh, we’re going to have morals now.'”
Arguing that the tax proposal is a case of selective enforcement, Lacey has been vocal about its inconsistency. "This isn’t just about me or any one creator," she stated. "If you want to call something a sin, then be consistent. Tax the alcohol. Tax the tobacco. Tax the strip clubs. You don’t get to pick and choose who gets punished based on your personal beliefs."
Lacey expanded on her views in an interview with the New York Post, pointing out the irony of implementing a 'Sin Tax' in a state like Florida, where Miami's history is intertwined with vice. She emphasized that until Fishback is ready to impose a tax on all potential 'sins,' his proposal remains "absolutely ludicrous."
Lacey isn't alone in her opposition. Other creators, including top earner Sophie Rain, have taken to social media to voice their disdain, labeling the proposal as "insane."
Defending her profession, Lacey candidly stated, "I love what I do and I’m not going to apologize for it. I started on TikTok building Legos. Now I run my own business, pay my own taxes, and answer to nobody. If that bothers someone running for office, that sounds like a him problem."
Fishback, who trails behind frontrunner Rep. Byron Donalds in the GOP primary race, may have underestimated the resilience and unity of the OnlyFans community. As the debate rages on, it remains to be seen how this proposal will affect the political landscape in Florida.
